The Punch Heard Around The World

There was a huge fight this past weekend for the sport of boxing. It was fight number four for welterweights Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. With the first fight considered a draw, it was just as controversial as the two following fights that would follow. Pacquiao/Marquez Part One took place in 2004, and featured THREE Marquez knockdowns, all in the first round. Many believe Marquez overcame those 3 knockdowns and won the next ten of the eleven rounds. On the other end, if a judge would have correctly scored the first round a 10-6 round for Pacquiao, the fight would have went to Manny.

The rematch took place in 2008, four years after the first fight, and again it was an action packed fight. Though this time there were no knockdowns, the fight again was controversial with many fight fans considering Marquez did enough in the fight to win, but the judges seen it differently, and awarded Manny the bout.

It took three years for the trilogy to take place, and in that time, Manny went from great boxer, to international superstar, winning fights in spectacular fashion, knocking out boxers such as Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto, just to name a few. Manny kept hearing that Marquez was calling him out, and answered the challenge of the fight. Pacquiao/Marquez 3 took place in November 2011, and lived to the hype of the first two fights, another action packed blockbuster where both men were fighting not only to win the fight, but to show the world that they really won both of the first fights. Part 3, again, was filled with major controversy, with Pacquiao getting the decision, and again many fight fans and analists agreed the judges screwed Marquez again. The difference was, many many more people have said in the media that Pacquiao lost that fight.

So with that, Pacquiao agreed to fight Marquez for a fourth fight. And for the fight, both Marquez and Pacquiao said that the fight will end the saga once and for all, and that there would be a knockout to show the world who was the clear winner, not just in part 4, but for all the fights combined.  They met again this past weekend in another huge fight, which also lived up to the fight. With both fighters trading punches back and forth, it was an awesome fight. Marquez earned his first knockdown of Pacquiao in the third round, which laid Pacquiao on his back. Pacquiao returned the favor, with a clean jab that knocked Marquez off balance, which caused a knockdown when Marquez’s glove hit the canvas. Then, Round 6 happened. With Manny winning the round, and the fight (I had Manny winning two rounds in the fight, counting the knockdown), Manny got over excited and threw a hook, and Marquez threw a haymaker that hit Pacquiao flush on the nose, which caused Pacquiao to be rendered unconscious for a few minutes. All just 2 seconds before the ending bell rang to end the sixth round. Unbelievable.
